Metro rail to start in six more UP cities in five years 4/5 (33)

The Uttar Pradesh government is focusing on expanding Metro rail services in Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Meerut, Bareilly, Jhansi and Prayagraj. Currently, construction work for Metro services is ongoing in Agra as well as in Kanpur, which has been funded by European Investment Bank (EIB). The EIB has also shared interest in funding the Gorakhpur Metro Lite project.

Due to costly metro infrastructure, Metro Light service has been brought as an option. The infrastructure of Metro Lite is cheaper than Metro.

Light Urban Rail Transit System or MetroLite comes with lesser passenger capacity and at lower cost. Most of the rail surface will be on ground to bring down construction cost. There will be a dedicated corridor for rail movement and it will be separated from road traffic.

Road width required will be a minimum of 8.5 m. If road width does not permit, one line will be provided on the road and a parallel road will be chosen for another line.

Integrated road and metro traffic signalling system will be provided with priority for metro lite system.

So far 751.50 km of metro service has been started in various cities of the country.
