Elections 2022 News LIVE Updates:  The state election commission NCT of Delhi will hold a press conference at 4 pm on Friday and announce dates for elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) named former TV anchor and journalist Isudan Gadhvi as its chief ministerial candidate for next month’s Assembly elections in Gujarat.

The announcement was made by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal who said the 40-year-old Gadhvi got as many as 73 per cent votes in a poll conducted by the party. Gadhvi was pitted against state party unit chief Gopal Italia, who played a key role in the Patidar community agitation.

The Delhi BJP on Friday hinted at not repeating its outgoing councilors on at least 60-70 per cent of the wards even as the Congress received over 1,000 applications from ticket seekers. The three major contestants — the BJP, the AAP and the Congress — have started working on their strategies and candidate selection for the polls to 250 wards of the MCD.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal will announce on Friday the name of the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections on the basis of opinions given by the people of the state, party office-bearers said on Thursday. Elections to the 182-member Gujarat Assembly will be held in two phases next month – on December 1 and 5, while votes will be counted on December 8. The state will witness a three-cornered contest – among the ruling BJP, opposition Congress and AAP.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s election committee for Gujarat held a meeting in the presence of senior leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah here on Thursday to shortlist three candidates for each Assembly constituency in the state, where elections will be held next month. The panels of these three shortlisted candidates for each constituency will then be sent to the BJP’s parliamentary board in Delhi for the final selection.

Shah was present on the first day of the three-day meeting along with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, party spokesperson Yagnesh Dave said.

As part of the candidate selection process for Gujarat elections, the party had sent 38 teams of observers to each district and six cities of the state last week. Ticket aspirants had made their representation before the observers.

The BJP had earlier said that on an average they received representation from 50 aspirants for tickets on each of the 182 seats. The team of observers had presented that list before the party’s state election committee.

The election committee shortlists candidates, party sources said.

Meanwhile, the Congress on Thursday said the Election Commission must give an explanation to the people of the country as to why it announced the poll schedule for Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat on separate dates even though counting of votes would be held on the same day.  Congress’s Gujarat in-charge Raghu Sharma alleged that the BJP got time to hold several rallies on official expense and misused public resources to the hilt in Gujarat.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, he said, “Want to thank Election Commission for announcing Gujarat polls finally despite BJP-led government’s pressure.” “The Election Commission should give an explanation as a constitutional body that while counting of votes for elections in both states will be on the same day, why elections were announced on different dates,” Sharma said.
